— -- Starting quarterback Baker Mayfield will seek a transfer from Texas Tech.

Mayfield called Kliff Kingsbury on Tuesday, then met with the coach in person Wednesday, reaffirming Kingsbury of his decision to transfer, a source confirmed to ESPN.com.

On Wednesday night, Mayfield told YNN-TV in his hometown of Austin, Texas, that he would seek a transfer due to a "miscommunication" with the Texas Tech coaching staff.

Even though Mayfield is a walk-on, NCAA rules state he still needs to get a release from Texas Tech to transfer to another school. Kingsbury had said previously the Red Raiders intended to put Mayfield on scholarship as soon as one came available after the season.

Mayfield won't be allowed to transfer to another Big 12 school, a source told ESPN's Joe Schad.

Mayfield became one of the best stories in college football this season, when he won the team's starting job during the preseason despite being a walk-on true freshman. Mayfield started the season opener against SMU, earning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors. He kept the job through the fifth game of the season before suffering a knee injury at Kansas.

Mayfield took the job back from fellow true freshman Davis Webb during Teas Tech's 10th game of the season against Kansas State. He started the Red Raiders' regular-season finale at Texas, and finished the year with 2,315 yards passing, 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions in eight starts.

With Mayfield gone, Webb will battle sophomore Michael Brewer to see who starts for Texas Tech (7-5) in the National University Holiday Bowl against Arizona State on Dec. 30.
