Raymond Felton back in court June 2

— -- NEW YORK -- Knicks guard Raymond Felton appeared in court on Tuesday and was formally charged with one count of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree and one count of criminal possession of a firearm. Each is considered a felony in New York state.

While it was earlier reported that Felton's wife alleged that he threatened her with a firearm, no domestic charges were revealed during Tuesday's court proceedings.

Felton returned to practice Wednesday and will play in Thursday's road game against Miami barring unforeseen punishment from the NBA , according to a league source. Felton could also choose to take a voluntary leave from the team.

NBA spokesman Tim Frank said the league is monitoring Felton's situation. The Knicks declined comment.

According to the NBA's collective bargaining agreement, a team is not permitted to discipline a player based solely on an arrest. Acting NBA Players Union director Ron Klempner said the union would take issue with any premature discipline of Felton. In most cases, the league will wait for the legal proceedings to run their course before taking action.

The judge ordered a six-month order of protection for Felton's wife on Tuesday and bail was set at $25,000. Bail has been posted and there are no legal restrictions on his ability to travel.

Court was adjourned in Felton's case until June 2, at which point grand-jury action may take place.

Neither Felton nor his attorney spoke as they left the courtroom.

Police said Felton turned himself in at 12:50 a.m. ET Tuesday, not long after the Knicks lost to the Dallas Mavericks on a buzzer-beater at Madison Square Garden.

According to the criminal complaint filed provided by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, Felton was in possession of an FNH model 5.7x28 millimeter caliber semiautomatic pistol loaded with approximately 18 rounds of live ammunition.

Tuesday's proceedings forced Felton into the spotlight off the court. On the court, the point guard has struggled with injuries throughout the course of the year. He has missed 16 games due to various ailments and his scoring (10.5 points) and shooting percentage (40.3 percent) are down significantly from last season.

The Knicks offered Felton in several trade packages before Thursday's trade deadline but couldn't complete a deal. The 29-year-old signed a three-year, $10 million contract with the Knicks before the 2012-13 season with a fourth-year player option.
