— -- BEREA, Ohio -- Three-time Pro Bowl quarterback Jeff Garcia has a new team and Tim Couch may soon be looking for one. The Cleveland Browns on Tuesday signed Garcia to a four-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed, but Garcia reportedly agreed to a deal worth $10 million for the first two years and $15 million for the next two. "It's exciting to be here," Garcia said at a Tuesday afternoon news conference. "I can't wait to get started and help this team win football games." The signing likely means the end of Couch's tenure with the club. The Browns had been looking to renegotiate with Couch, the first overall pick in the 1999 draft who is scheduled to make a base salary of $7.6 million in 2004. With Garcia in the fold, Couch will likely be traded or released. Kelly Holcomb beat out Couch for the starting job in training camp last season, but recently underwent shoulder surgery and is expected to be sidelined for at least three months. Garcia, 34, was a starter the last five seasons with the 49ers and made the Pro Bowl three straight years from 2000-02. Last season, Garcia completed a career-low 57.4 percent of his passes for 2,704 yards with 18 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He threw for more than 3,300 yards in each of the previous three years, passing for a franchise-record 4,278 in 2000. Garcia played five seasons with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League before joining the Niners, winning the Grey Cup and Most Valuable Player honors his final year.
