— -- A counting issue will prevent Guinness from giving the NHL the world record for largest attendance at a hockey game, Yahoo! Sports reported.

The NHL sold 105,491 tickets for the Jan. 1 outdoor game at Michigan Stadium between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings, more than the current Guinness record holder -- 104,173 for a 2010 NCAA game between Michigan and Michigan State at the same site.

For the purposes of the record, Guinness and the NHL had previously agreed to count the tickets by bar codes that were scanned by ticket takers at the gates.

But in part because of the cold, wintry weather, fans were still arriving in the second period. At that point, ticket takers had stopped scanning tickets.

Yahoo!, citing a league source, reported the scanner difference would be enough to keep the league from setting a world record.
