— -- PARIS -- American Sloane Stephens and former French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia both advanced to the third round after winning in straight sets Thursday.

Stephens, seeded 15th, won 6-1, 6-3 against Slovenia's Polona Hercog, while Kuznetsova beat Camila Giorgi of Italy 7-6 (5), 6-3.

Kuznetsova, seeded 27th, broke Giorgi's serve four times and next faces fifth-seeded Petra Kvitova, who won 6-4, 6-4 against Marina Erakovic.

No. 6 Sixth-seeded Jelena Jankovic won 7-5, 6-0 against Japan's Kurumi Nara, and No. 10 Sara Errani of Italy -- a runner-up in 2012 and semifinalist last year -- won 6-2, 6-4 against Germany's Dinah Pfizenmaier.

Another former champion earned a win Thursday, as Ana Ivanovic of Serbia beat Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 7-5, 6-2.

The 11th-seeded Ivanovic dropped her own serve three times but broke Svitolina's serve six times. She clinched victory on her second match point with a forehand winner down the line on Svitolina's serve.

Since winning here in 2008 for her only Grand Slam title, the 26-year-old Ivanovic has reached only one quarterfinal at a major -- the US Open in 2012 -- and has never been past the fourth round at Roland Garros.

Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic, who beat second-seeded Li Na -- the former champion -- in the first round, followed up with a 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-3 win against American Alison Riske.

No. 23 Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic also advanced. She will next play Ivanovic.

Also through to the third round are: No. 22 Ekaterina Makarova; No. 28 Andrea Petkovic, Kiki Bertens, Julia Glushko and Pauline Parmentier.

Bertens next plays Spaniard Silvia Soler-Espinosa, who downed Belgium's Yanina Wickmayer 6-2, 6-4.
