Steelers release kicker Josh Scobee, sign Chris Boswell

— -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are officially on their fourth kicker since the preseason.

The Steelers on Saturday released Josh Scobee, who missed two crucial kicks in Thursday's 23-20 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, and signed free agent Chris Boswell.

Boswell, who had a tryout, signed a two-year deal with the Steelers, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Caplan. He was in Giants training camp this summer.

Since Shaun Suisham went down with a torn ACL in his left knee in the first preseason game, the team signed Garrett Hartley, who's now on injured reserve, and then traded a sixth-round pick to Jacksonville for the rights to Scobee, who carried a $2.5 million salary.

The Steelers likely walked away from Scobee without much financial burden because Jacksonville paid $925,000 via a signing bonus to facilitate the trade.

Scobee also missed two kicks in the season opener, marking 10 misfires since 2014, a league high. 

Boswell, who played at Rice, participated in the 2014 Senior Bowl and was cut by the Texans later in the year.
