Texas' Augie Garrido tops wins list

— -- Lukas Schiraldi cemented the family name on the mound -- and into the annals of the sport -- Tuesday night, helping make Texas coach Augie Garrido the winningest coach in college baseball history.

Schiraldi, the son of former Red Sox reliever and Texas national champion pitcher Calvin Schiraldi, ushered in Garrido's 1,894th career victory with seven innings of one-hit ball.

Garrido, 75, supplanted longtime Division II and NAIA coach Gordon Gillespie with the 5-1 win over Texas State in Austin, Texas.

Garrido became the winningest coach in Division I in 2003.

Garrido has led Texas to two national championships, in 2002 and '05. He guided Cal State Fullerton to College World Series titles in 1979, 1984 and 1995.

According to reports, Schiraldi, coming off an eight-shutout-inning performance last week for the No. 16 Longhorns, allowed only two base runners in his seven innings.

The junior, 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA on the year, retired the side five times.

Ben Johnson belted his second home run of the season and Mark Payton went 3-for-4 as Texas jumped to an early lead on Texas State, taking a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning.
