The Slinky was created by accident in 1943, when engineer Richard James knocked springs off his desk only to watch them "walk" around by themselves. The jingle that accompanied the toy is still remembered today: "Everyone knows it's Slinky!" (Strong - National Museum of Play®, Rochester, New York.)
