Ruth Handler created Barbie in the 1950s to bring a new look to the baby dolls that were dominating store shelves. Barbie went on to become the biggest selling fashion doll of all time, and later generated criticism from feminists for its "unrealistic standards for physical beauty." Mattel has since created a more cosmopolitan Barbie: African-American, Hispanic-American, Eskimo, Hawaiian and Chinese Barbies could star in a multiethnic runway show.
