Each year in September, the Arctic ice cap melts to its lowest point. The ice seen here is the minimum sea ice concentration in the Arctic in 2004. The red line, meanwhile, is the average sea ice concentration in September for the years 1979 through 2002. (NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Scientific Visualization Studio)
