A 25- to 30-foot long humpback whale was seen Thursday near New York's Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Local authorities said the whale did not seem to be injured or distressed and was last seen heading back out to the ocean, The New York Times reported. According to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the humpback whale was listed as endangered in 1970. Whaling during the 19th century nearly decimated the population, but ever since an international ban on commercial whaling was put in place in 1964, the population has started to recover.
