Antarctica has warmed by 4.5 degrees since 1945; its ice carries 90 percent of the world's fresh water; melting ice threatens to raise ocean levels by up to 20 feet, which could displace 80 percent of the world's population. Upon approaching the Antarctica peninsula, the first icebergs look like distant ships. This one carries its last hurrah as it floats to its inescapable fate, in the golden light of an endless sunset. Iceberg, Livingston Island, Antarctica, January 2006. (Sebastian Copeland)
