On June 29, 2011, 150 diamondback terrapin turtles delayed flights at New York City's Kennedy Airport as they made their annual trek across a normally busy runway to get to a sandy area next to the water where they lay their eggs. The Federal Aviation Administration said delays reached 30 minutes for some flights. There could be further flight delays into the summer because the turtles were expected to continue their egg-laying trek throughout July 2011. (The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey)
