The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on NASA's Terra satellite captured this image of Super Typhoon Choi-Wan Sept. 15, 2009. In a statement on its Web site, NASA said the "monstrous" typhoon had sustained winds of about 145 miles per hour when the image was captured Twenty-four hours later, the storm reached Category 5 status with sustained winds of 160 mph. Super Typhoon Choi-Wan is not forecast to hit any major land mass. Here, the storm is centered over the northern arc of the Mariana Islands in the western Pacific Ocean. (NASA)
