Facebook and Instagram outages were reported Tuesday, with users unable to access the social media platforms for about 40 minutes.

Reports surfaced regarding the outage after 1 a.m. Tuesday, with service restored around 2 a.m.

According to a Facebook spokesperson, the situation was not the result of a third-party attack, but instead occurred after Facebook introduced a change that affected configuration systems.

People discussed the situation on Twitter -- with #Facebookdown becoming a worldwide trending topic. Some people wrote about their hopes for a Facebook-free world.

Others acknowledged the dependability of traditional books.

While others tried to survive without Facebook.

Other outages were also reported across platforms such as Tinder, AIM and HipChat Tuesday. Tinder poked fun at the outage, writing on Twitter, "PS: Your matches aren't gone, just logout and log back in!”
