Global warming is seen as the cause of the collapse of both the Larsen A and B ice shelf. The collapse uncovered a large portion of the Antarctic seabed. Suddenly made accessible to exploration, the seabed represents a true frontier, one of Earth's most pristine marine ecosystems. These fast-growing animals, called ascidians, or sea squirts, were discovered there. Sea squirts may be a window onto the imminent biodiversity change resulting from the collapse.
