Bush Creates Marine Monuments in Historic Effort
In what is being called a historic effort, President George W. Bush Tuesday designated three areas in the Pacific Ocean as national marine monuments. The areas include the home of a giant land crab, a sunken island ringed by pink-colored coral, and equatorial waters that are home to sharks and other marine predators. The areas total 195,274 square miles. The Palmyra Atoll, shown here, is now protected under this announcement.
