California-based photographer Pete Eckert shoots in total darkness and uses a wide assortment of light sources, such as flashlights, candles and lasers, to capture images. In this sense, Eckert's photographic work serves as a metaphor for his condition: Whatever light his camera catches comes to life, whatever it misses remains shrouded in darkness. "I'm a very visual person," Eckert says, "I just can't see." (Pete Eckert, UCR/California Museum of Photography)
