P A R I S, May 14 -- The international police organization Interpol has stepped up its action against cybercrime with a new section on its Web site on how to combat malicious computer viruses.

Transnational crime of this nature can be particularly difficult to investigate, Interpols Secretary-General Ronald Noble said in a statement today.

Computer viruses are a real threat. Our virus alert section will enable computer users to keep up to date, Noble said in the statement, released by Interpols Lyon headquarters.

The section, available via www.interpol.int, includes a checklist to help companies assess whether they have sufficient safeguards in place.

The section also lists the names of known viruses that are spread as electronic mail attachments.
