July 29, 2011— -- In today's TechBytes, smartphones may have claimed another victim. Sales of Nintendo's new gaming device, the 3DS, are tanking. So the company is slashing its price -- to $170 from $250.

If you already have one, Nintendo will give you some free games.

Toshiba Thrive tablet

If you're not quite comfortable with a tablet like the iPad, Toshiba's Thrive may be for you. Unlike other tablets, Toshiba's Thrive has ports and slots on the side of the device, allowing users to play media from flash drives and SD cards directly on the device.

USA Today's Ed Baig has mixed feelings about the Thrive.

"I think this machine will appeal to people who are a little bit nervous about say, moving from a laptop to a tablet. This kind of eases that transition a little bit. But if you're in the market for a standalone tablet, while this is an okay choice, it would not be my first choice."

The Toshiba Thrive starts at $430.
