While much emphasis has been placed on container security in the past, Chertoff said this new effort will provide additional security since a potential WMD or other explosive devices could be placed in a private aircraft heading toward the United States.
"We are closing the last major vulnerability to bring dangerous materials in from overseas," Chertoff said.
With only two months before the hand-off to President-elect Barack Obama's administration, Chertoff said today that the DHS review team has begun their work at DHS headquarters. Chertoff also said he is currently in the process of writing a lengthy letter for his successor, listing key challenges and advice on what lies ahead.
