Arthur C Clarke, 90 -- Science fiction writer who wrote scores of fiction and nonfiction books, including, "2001: A Space Odyssey."

"I hope that during the next century, maybe even during my lifetime, we'll solve one of the great mysteries: Are we alone in the universe?"

Anthony Minghella, 54 -- Director of "The Talented Mr. Ripley" and "Cold Mountain," who won an Oscar for "The English Patient."

Ivan Dixon, 76 -- Actor and TV director best known for "Hogan's Heroes." The actor also played roles that characterized black struggles.

THIS WEEK, THE PENTAGON RELEASED THE NAMES OF FIVE SOLDIERS KILLED IN IRAQ.
