Jan. 4, 2009 -- Helen Suzman, 91 -- South African lawmaker. As one of the country's few white activists she became internationally renowned for her battle against apartheid.

Samuel P. Huntington, 81 -- Political scientist and author.

Claiborne Pell, 90 -- Former senator from Rhode Island, 1960-1997. Best known for sponsoring the 1972 program that helped 54 million middle- and low-income students attend college.

Donald E. Westlake, 75 -- Award-winning mystery novelist.

THIS WEEK, THE PENTAGON RELEASED THE NAMES OF FOUR SOLDIERS AND MARINES KILLED IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN:
