— -- Editor's note: KLM does not employ the dog in the video, but hired the canine as part of a promotional campaign, a spokesperson told ABC News.

When you leave something on board an airplane, you may assume it's gone forever. Perhaps you put in a halfhearted, yet hopeful, call to the airline or tweet at them. But deep down, you know. You're never going to see that iPhone again.

If only airlines employed dogs trained to sniff out the owners of left-behind objects.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has just "hired" the cutest beagle pup. And if the promotional video they've released is to be believed, this little guy -- named Sherlock -- is returning items like phones and stuffed animals to KLM passengers at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport.

"Personally I think he's a real asset to the company," one airline employee says on the video. "And he can do something no one else can."

"When you see the reactions of the passengers, that is really amazing," says another.

Sherlock is the heart (and no doubt the cutest member) of the airline's newly created Lost & Found team. KLM said it fields 40k questions via social media, and one of the most popular is about getting lost items back. The team uses all available information like seat number, phone numbers and public social media details to reunite passengers with their belongings.

"Despite the challenge of locating the owner, first results show that over 80 percent of the found items can now be reunited with their owners," the airline said.

Dogs are becoming regular fixtures at airports in the U.S., too.

Both San Francisco and Los Angeles airports now employ therapy dogs to soothe passengers before a flight.
