Bucklehead from "Seat Assignment" (2010 and ongoing). Artist and educator Nina Katchadourian began her "Seat Assignment" series on a flight from New York to Atlanta. "It's this time we're always trying to get rid of when it could be spent trying to be furiously productive." She challenged herself to create as much as possible with items she found around her.

Landslide from "Seat Assignment" (2010 and ongoing). One project within the "Seat Assignment" series is called "Disasters," in which Katchadourian uses crushed snacks or other found items to create tornadoes and cloud plumes across the glamorous spreads of in-flight magazine features.

On a 14-hour flight from San Francisco to Auckland, New Zealand, inspiration struck again. "I spontaneously put a tissue-paper seat cover on my head and it immediately reminded me of one of those Flemish paintings." She spent the rest of the flight creating variations.

"There is obviously a lot of humor in 'Seat Assignment,' and I'm fine with that," said the artist. "But I think the other temperamental side is one of anxiety. When you're on a plane, you're in a metal tube, hurtling through space at an insane speed."

Sugar Fox from "Seat Assignment" (2010 and ongoing). "I do a lot of work-related travel: to art installations, lectures and schools," she said. "But I also have family all over the world. My mother is from Finland, and my father from Lebanon. I grew up in California, but I spent every summer in Finland. So I've grown up on planes, basically."

Smoking Engine from "Seat Assignment" (2010 and ongoing). The series shows no signs of exhausting itself yet. "Every few flights, something new happens that I haven't tried at all," said Katchadourian. "And there is a definite challenge in place not to repeat myself."

Topiary from "Seat Assignment" (2010 and ongoing). "Part of the question I am always trying to ask is, 'What can be done with nothing and what can be done with dumb stuff that is around us?'" said the artist. "'Seat Assignment' is one way I've explored that."

Dancers from "Seat Assignment" (2010 and ongoing). "I've always loved that moment when someone falls asleep next to you," said Katchadourian. "It's really sort of special... But in all my travels I've only ever had three people ask me what I was doing while sitting next to them."
