Snow Kayaking : It's a spin on traditional sledding: Take your freshly waxed kayak down the hill for a super fast ride. But keep in mind, this is an extreme sport and few commercial ski mountains allow it, so you may be on your own to find a hill to kayak. Here, people compete during a snow kayak downhill race near Otepaa, Estonia, on Jan. 26, 2013.

Shovel racing consists of riding a shovel, rather than a sled, down a snowy hill. Today, the most famous shovel racing competition takes place at the Angel Fire Resort in Angel Fire, N.M. Racers as young as 6 sit on the scoop of a standard aluminum snow shovel, handle pointed downhill, and lift their hands and feet for a ride. Here, a person is seen during the Angel Fire shovel races in 2011.

Ice Skating in the Desert: If you're going to cheat winter and take a warm-weather vacation, you can still indulge in winter fun in Las Vegas. Caesars Chalet Holiday Ice Rink is open until Jan. 20. It's on the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo, right across from the Absinthe tent (of course).

Ice Hotels: If you like ice so much you want to sleep on it, there are plenty of ice hotels that pop up in winter for you to do just that. Look for one with beds and furniture actually made from ice and snow (yes, you'll get a blanket). Here, the Absolut Icebar Jukkasjarvi at the Icehotel Sweden, 2010.

Horse-Drawn Sleigh Rides: Popular as a romantic activity in European, New England and Colorado mountain towns, horse-drawn sleigh rides in the snow usually include a warm blanket for cuddling, a bottle of champagne for sharing, and a starry night for gazing. Pictured here, a couple enjoys a ride in a horse drawn sleigh in Aspen, Colo.

Polar Bear Plunge: They're often, but not always, held on New Year's Day but there's nothing stopping you from jumping into a cold body of water on a freezing cold day. Except every cell in your body telling you not to, that is. Here, swimmers jump into frigid waters at Coney Island beach in New York, Jan. 1 2014, as they take part in the 111th Annual New Year's Day Polar Bear Plunge.
