In celebration of its 20th anniversary, Conde Nast Traveler asked readers to submit their favorite travel photo and a description of their journey. 20 finalists were culled from over 29,000 entries.
Winner Gene Pembroke of Philadelphia snapped his winning shot, "Fractures in a Frozen Lake," in Western Mongolia on a frozen body of water known as the Black Lake. As he stood atop the ice, a wind blew the snow off the surface, drawing his attention to the cracks and bubbles trapped beneath him. As the sun illuminated the lake's brilliant blue color, he clicked the shutter.
The magazine is hosting another photo contest, starting Dec. 18. More details at concierge.com.
