Denver was originally supposed to host the 1976 Winter Olympics but voters there rejected a $5 million bond issue to finance the construction of facilities. So the games headed back to the 1964 site in Innsbruck. The games were once again dominated by the USSR and East Germany, which finished first and second, respectively, in the medal count. The Soviet hockey team, which had won the gold medal in 1972, returned with most of the same players and won its fourth straight Olympic title.
