T E G U C I G A L P A, Honduras, Oct. 16 -- An American man touring Central America in his motorhome was knifed to death by two assailants, police said today.

Anthony Ronald Pawlack, 65, of California, was attacked on Sunday while resting in his motorhome at a gas station in Zambrano, about 20 miles north of the capital, Police Sgt. Alexis Ramirez said.

Authorities were investigating the case as a robbery given that Pawlack had withdrawn a large amount of money from the bank the day before, Ramirez said.

Police found numerous credit cards and checks, along with $80 in cash, in the victims wallet. It was not clear why the assailants didnt steal those as well.

Pawlack, whose hometown was unknown, was touring Central America, Ramirez said. At the time of his assault, he had just arrived from El Salvador and was on his way to San Pedro Sula, a city in Honduras about 110 miles north of Tegucigalpa.

No suspects have been detained.
