— -- Four people have been arrested after a student was shot this morning on the Johnson C. Smith University campus in North Carolina, school officials said.

Around 2:15 a.m, a student sitting in a car on campus was hit by gunfire, according to a statement from JCSU, a private liberal arts school in Charlotte.

The student was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, the school said. The student had not been targeted, the school added, and is expected to be released from the hospital today.

The suspects fled the scene in a car, according to the school, and after a short pursuit, they crashed. Four people -- all non-students -- were arrested, according to the school. The suspects' range in age from 19 to 21, according to the school statement.

Three guns and marijuana were seized from the suspects' car, the school said.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and the Johnson C. Smith University Police Department are still investigating.

"While I am dismayed that this incident happened, I'm pleased that our partnership with local law enforcement and the execution of our campus emergency response plan resulted in quick and thorough actions that prevented a major tragedy," University President Ronald L. Carter said in the statement.
