— -- An escaped inmate who had evaded capture in New Jersey for nearly a week was apprehended today in the woods along the Garden State Parkway in Lacey Township, officials said, adding that he did not resist arrest.

Arthur Buckel -- who once served time for manslaughter for killing a baby -- escaped from Ancora, a minimum-security satellite unit of Bayside State Prison in Hammonton, New Jersey, on Tuesday, just weeks before being eligible for parole.

As the manhunt for Buckel, 38, intensified, police increased security at local schools.

Buckel was captured today after a driver reported seeing someone in the woods along the parkway, Lacey Township Police said. An officer responded to the scene, found Buckel, and held him at gunpoint, police said.

Buckel was taken into custody without resistance, police said.

Buckel was turned over to state officials at the scene and taken to the New Jersey State Prison in Trenton, police said.

"Buckel had been serving a sentence for burglary and theft," the Department of Corrections said today. "Because of his actions, inmate Buckel could receive an additional 3 to 5 years of incarceration for the escape charge and he could receive additional criminal charges for his activities while he was a fugitive."
