Sept. 11, 2012— -- A Florida mother was arrested today after police alleged she chained her 7-year-old son's hands together as he slept and repeatedly stabbed him in the chest.

Maisa Alvarez, 42, was arrested after authorities responded to a call at her Lake Wales, Fla., home at 8:14 a.m. this morning.

Investigators determined the unidentified 7-year-old victim awoke when Alvarez was allegedly chaining his hands together. She then repeatedly stabbed her son in the chest, police said.

"The child began trying to defend himself by blocking the attack and as a result also received defensive wounds to his arms," the Lake Wales Police Department said in a statement.

The victim was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital where he is in stable condition. None of the boy's stab wounds are life threatening, according to a report sent from the hospital to police.

No motive has been established.

Alvarez was booked into Polk County Jail on charges of attempted murder and aggravated child abuse.
