SC Husband, Wife Charged in Missing Student's Murder
Heather Elvis was last heard from in December after going on a date.
Feb. 25, 2014— -- Authorities are keeping tight-lipped about what led them to search the home of a South Carolina couple and then charge them with the murder of a missing cosmetology student.
Sidney and Tammy Moorer also face kidnapping, indecent exposure and obstruction of justice charges in the Dec. 18 disappearance of Heather Elvis, 20.
Couple Suspected in Woman's Disappearance
Police have not located Elvis' body and have not revealed a possible motive for murder, however investigators said the Mooers and Elvis may have had a relationship.
Horry County Police Chief Saundra Rhodes discussed the murder charges at a Monday press conference, saying additional evidence collected at the Moorer's home on Friday connected them to the crime.
"The evidence that we located there led to the charges of murder," the chief said.
She declined to identify the incriminating evidence.
Police said Elvis was last heard from in the early morning of Dec. 18 after she went on a date. Her 2001 dark green Dodge Intrepid was found abandoned the next day at the Peachtree Boat Landing on the Waccamaw River.
A bond hearing for the Moorers has been set for the week of March 17.
In a Feb. 20 Facebook post, Tammy Moorer wrote that she and her husband had been fully cooperating with the police investigation.
She said Sidney Moorer spoke with investigators voluntarily on the phone and in person. That same day, Moorer said she allowed police to search her home and camper.
"In addition, three search warrants were also served. One for telephones, one for surveillance, and one for our vehicle," she wrote.
Attorneys for the Moorers and the Elvis family were not able to immediately be reached for comment.
