A brief history of Popes in the US

— -- Pope Francis arrives in America today, making him only the fourth pontiff to visit the United States.

Pope Paul VI was the first acting pope to set foot on American soil in 1965. He held Mass at Yankee Stadium.

Pope John Paul II first visited in 1979, and came to the U.S. a total of seven times. He was the first pope to visit the White House.
