1 Marine Dead After Aircraft Makes Hard Landing During Training

— -- A Marine is dead after an aircraft made a hard landing during a training exercise Sunday in Hawaii, a military spokesman said.

Marine Corps spokesman Capt. Brian Block said that at approximately 11:40 a.m. local time an MV-22 Osprey made the hard landing at Marine Corps Training Area Bellows in Hawaii.

There were 22 Marines on board, and all the other 21 were taken to a local hospital for treatment, Block said.

Emergency response teams were on the scene and the cause of the incident is under investigation, he said.

The Osprey and the Marines on it are assigned to the 15 Marine Expeditionary Unit stationed out of Camp Pendleton, earthquake.htm" id="ramplink_California_" target="_blank">California, but it's likely this aircraft operated out of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego.

It's been a difficult week for Marine Corp aviation. On Sunday the Defense Department identified six Marines killed when their UH-1Y helicopter crashed in a mountainous region of Nepal on May 12 during a mission to provide relief to victims of the earthquake.
