  • Mom On a Quest to Investigate Daughter's Death

Kelly Osborn has spent nearly five years trying to piece together the details of how her daughter, Sheena Morris, could have been found dead in her hotel room on New Year's Day. "She was my only daughter, so she was everything to me," Osborn told 20/20's David Muir. "From the day she was born-and still to today-she is everything to me."

Sheena's parents divorced when she was 3 years-old, but Kelly Osborn told 20/20 both parents remained close and active in Sheena's life. "She was very lucky like that. She didn't have to worry about doing separate things-we could all do those things together."

Sheena and Kelly were especially close, often having "doggie sleepovers" with their beloved pets. Kelly says they shared everything with each other. "She was an amazing daughter. I could talk to her about anything," she told David Muir. "we shared a lot together."

Sheena was described by friends as the life of the party and full of happiness. "Sheena owned the room the minute she walked into it. People were drawn to her," her friend Rena Carideo told 20/20. "She was absolutely vivacious."

Sheena was 20 years-old when she became involved with her future fiancé, 42-year-old Joe Genoese. The pairing immediately set off alarm bells for Sheena's mom Kelly, who was concerned with the age difference. "My first impression was obviously his age. I was told he was 35 when I first met him," she told David Muir. "The minute I laid eyes on him, I said, 'You are not 35.' I was angry about it."

The relationship was described as tumultuous by Sheena's friends and family. "There were a lot of fights," her friend Rena Carideo told ABC News' 20/20. "She wasn't the type of person to back down. And he clearly wasn't the type of person to back down. So they butt heads more often than not."

An after-Christmas trip to the beach was supposed to smooth things over, but shortly after midnight the couple fought so loudly that guests in the next room called 911. Joe Genoese told 20/20 he left the hotel and drove home to Indian Rocks Beach, Fl. and wasn't able to reach Sheena the next day. Kelly contacted the authorities, who found Sheena hanging in the hotel shower when they arrived.

Sheena's death was ruled a suicide by the local police. But her family and friends say that doesn't add up. "The moment I got the call, I knew something wasn't right about the situation. I know Sheena didn't take her own life," said Rena Carideo.

Kelly has struggled with the loss of her daughter, which has been compounded by her involvement in her daughter's death investigation. "It's unbearable in so many ways," she told 20/20. "She is my only daughter and my only child, and it was my job to take care of her and to look out for her."

Kelly's tireless effort helped to reopen her daughter's case. Last October, investigators at the Florida Department of Law Enforcement began reinvestigating Sheena's death. Their investigation remains ongoing, but Kelly says she will not stop fighting for her daughter. "I won't give up until justice is served."
