Brooks County, Texas, located 70 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border has seen a surge in undocumented immigrant deaths. Authorities recovered 129 bodies among the heavy brush and deep sand in 2012 and expect the death toll to nearly double this year.

Students from the Baylor University Forensic Recovery Team helped exhume 63 nameless graves during a May trip to the cemetery. They hope to enter DNA information into a national database and match families with the remains of their missing loved ones.

The bodies, which were buried in wood coffins, were found in various states of decomposition. "Sometimes we would start digging and we could smell it. A couple of times we found little maggots in the ground, so we knew we were getting close," said Jennifer Husak, a senior at Baylor University.

Peyton Chapman, a pre-med sophomore at Baylor University, said the trip was her first time seeing a dead body. "We didn't think of the nasty side of it," she said. "We were more concerned with getting them out of a grave and safely place in a new body bag."

Husak said she was surprised to see how close together people were buried in the overcrowded cemetery. "It made it more real, how big of a problem this is and how many people are dying from trying to cross the border."
