  • On Nov. 14, 2012, Bessey was on his way to work on Interstate 15, when he thought he was shot by someone in another car. "In the corner of my eye, I could see that my rear-window was blown out. At that point I feel some blood in the back of my neck. I can feel ... the bullet," Bessey recalled to "20/20."

  • At first, the trooper who responded to Bessey's 911 call found it hard to believe he was shot. Yet at the hospital, doctors removed a single bullet from Bessey's neck. Police initially considered it might be an act of road rage, and Bessey told them the alleged shooter was in a gold SUV.

  • Thanks to local news coverage, a trucker reported seeing a gold SUV at a gas station a few miles away from the shooting. Bessey's former brother-in-law Richard Pearson (bottom left) and his adopted son Michael Bessey (top left) were seen on the gas station's security camera footage driving off towards where Robert Bessey was shot around the same time.

  • Police tracked down the gold SUV and found it belonged to Pearson's girlfriend. Michael Bessey (right) and Pearson (left) were arrested. In the hospital, Robert Bessey made shocking allegations that Michael Bessey had been threatening to kill him. But police also began to look closely at Robert Bessey's ex-wife Amy Bessey.

  • Though Amy Bessey said Robert Bessey treated her like a queen in the earlier years of their marriage, she told "20/20" she endured years of physical abuse from him. "It went on for quite a while," Amy Bessey said. Robert Bessey would not discuss with "20/20" whether or not he was abusive to Amy Bessey.

  • Amy Bessey also said Robert Bessey had become delusional and unstable as her biological son Michael Bessey challenged his authority. "Michael getting older and bigger caused Robert [to become] unraveled over the last two years," she said. According to Amy Bessey, Robert Bessey's alleged abuse and a temporary protective order against him led to their divorce.

  • While Amy Bessey said she had nothing to do with the shooting, the district attorney's office learned that Michael Bessey told a snitch in prison that Amy Bessey had been plotting Robert Bessey's murder for months. Amy Bessey was charged with seven felonies, including conspiracy to commit the murder of Robert Bessey.

  • Prosecutors thought Amy Bessey's motive wasn't safety after years of abuse, but Robert Bessey's life insurance policy worth $250,000 of which she was the beneficiary. They alleged that she conspired with her brother Richard Pearson and Michael Bessey. At her trial last November, it took a jury just over 6 hours to find her guilty. She was sentenced to 14 to 44 years in prison.
