Scott and Beth Catt had two kids, Hayden and Abby Catt. When Abby Catt, pictured here with Beth Catt, was just a baby, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. "The only memory I have of my mom...my mom was on a bright orange stretcher being carried down the stairs, and I remember her face," Abby Catt told "20/20."

Beth Catt died at the age of 32, leaving behind 4-year-old Hayden Catt and 2-year-old Abby Catt with their grieving father. "I was in denial about not needing help, about grieving, about depression, about my ability to raise them by myself," Scott Catt, pictured here with his daughter, told "20/20." "I started drinking heavily."

While their father drowned his sorrows in alcohol, Hayden and Abby Catt grew older and thrived in school as decent students, idolizing their father. The siblings told "20/20" that their father wasn't much of a disciplinarian. "He was my best friend for a long time," Hayden Catt said. The family is seen here with Scott Catt's mother Kay Bacon.

Hayden and Abby Catt, seen here in this photo with Scott Catt, also became star swimmers, and their dad was the president of the swim club, when he was sober. Over the years, Scott Catt was arrested for driving under the influence, assault and disorderly conduct. "I mean, I knew it wasn't normal, but to me it was my normal," Abby Catt said.

By the time they were young teenagers, Hayden and Abby Catt had grown to rely on each other. "My sister's the only consistent thing I've had my whole life," Hayden Catt said. "I'm the only consistent thing that she's had too." The two said they worried about their dad's drinking and often found themselves assuming the roles of parents.

After partying away their savings and losing their home, Scott Catt moved his family from Oregon to Texas for a fresh start and a new job, when Abby Catt was still in high school. Stressed over money, Hayden Catt later accepted a startling offer from his dad to rob a bank, which his dad said he had successfully gotten away with before. Hayden Catt soon asked his sister to join them.
