— -- Police responded to reports of shots being fired at a North Carolina church Wednesday afternoon and exchanged fire with the gunman, officials said.

According to the Haywood County Emergency Management office, there was a call about shots fired at the Maple Grove Baptist Church at 3:12 p.m., said Assistant Director Bill Miller.

When first responders arrived, they found a man inside the church and exchanged gunfire with him, the Haywood County Sheriff's office said in a statement.

No one else was inside the church at the time.

Police said there were no injuries to law enforcement, but the gunman was treated by emergency medical services.

Calls were made to residents to shelter in place.

The State Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate, the sheriff's office said.
