Famous Literary Hoaxes Clifford Irving Howard Hughes Biography
Clifford Irving used forged letters to convince McGraw-Hill to publish his biography of Howard Hughes in the 1970s. Irving falsely claimed that he'd met with the reclusive billionaire to collect information for the book. Hughes sued the publisher for the false memoir, and Irving was sentenced to two years in federal prison. The story became a 2007 movie called "The Hoax," starring Richard Gere. (amazon.com)
