Famous Literary Hoaxes Margaret B. Jones Love and Consequences
Margaret B. Jones, author of the 2008 memoir "Love and Consequences," is another writer who duped not just a publisher and Oprah Winfrey but The New York Times too. In the book, Jones' describes her life as a half American Indian, half white woman who'd grown up in foster homes and sold drugs for a Los Angeles street gang. In reality, Jones' real name was Margaret Seltzer. She was raised by her biological parents and received private schooling throughout her life. Seltzer's fraud came to light after a New York Times profile of the author appeared last February. Seltzer's sister saw the article and called the paper to say the book was a fabrication.
