1) Maj. Brian Dennis met a dog at an Iraqi fort he was patrolling along the border of Syria during his second combat tour in Iraq. During several months, the San Diego native befriended the animal, whose body bore the scars of living a difficult life in a war-torn country. When it was time for Dennis and his unit to move on, he said goodbye to the dog for what he thought was the last time. Two days later and 70 miles away, the dog wandered into the Marine's new camp. Now, Nubs -- as Dennis has named him for his nubby ears -- is in Jordan to receive vaccinations before a U.S. trip. If all goes as planned, Dennis will be reunited with the Nubs when he finishes his tour in the spring.

Accompanying these photos are passages from an e-mail Dennis sent home about Nubs. (Maj. Brian Dennis)
