The campus was locked down as a criminal investigation began. The probe lasted much of this year and included gun advocates and opponents, mental health specialists and the governor of Virginia. The shooter chained shut three of the main doors at Norris Hall. He peeked into a few classrooms before opening fire on the second floor. It took police officers five minutes to enter the building; when they got to the second floor, the gunman had already killed himself.
