Wiley Family's Past

Irene Wiley with her two children -- John and Genie -- in this seemingly model family portrait taken sometime in the early 1950s. The photo was taken just before the 20-month-old was confined to her bedroom and forced to spend most of the day strapped to a potty seat. Irene, nearly blind from a childhood accident and cataracts, told authorities after her arrest that she was powerless to stop her husband from abusing the children. (Courtesy of Wiley family )
