Genie and her mother, Irene, in her home in 1989 at the age of 32. Irene Wiley died in 2003. Genie has been a ward of the state of California since the late 1970s and now lives in a private adult-care home. She was placed in at least six foster homes after a four-year study at Children's Hospital at UCLA ended when federal funding was dropped. The child had made significant strides in acquiring language while at UCLA, but regressed after being placed into foster care – where she was sometimes abused. Today, according to her former doctors, she speaks a few words and remembers the sign language taught to her while in their care.
