The home on Golden West Road where John and Genie were virtually held hostage by their deranged father and a mentally unstable and blind mother. "I wish I had been born in a different family," said John. "They weren't good teachers. They weren't social and were poor. They never taught me about the world." The home belonged to Pearl Martin, John's paternal grandmother, the only person in his life who offered him love and support. He was with her when she was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was 6. (Courtesy of Wiley family )
