Sea Lion Hitches Ride on Family's Kayak
The sea lion drew a crowd when he surprised the family
— -- A sea lion in Santa Barbara, California, gave a family a Valentine’s Day surprise when it hitched a ride on their kayak.
A father and two kids were kayaking in Santa Barbara’s Stearns Wharf around 2 p.m. Saturday when the sea lion jumped on board, much to their surprise.
“It just jumped up from behind the dad,” Joe Buttitta told ABC News.
Buttitta, morning anchor and reporter for local ABC affiliate KEYT, was at the wharf Saturday when he said he saw a big crowd gather around the pier.
“I went over and just started filming,” said Buttitta, who posted photos and a video on Twitter. “The dad was petting it and rubbing its neck.”
The sea lion stayed on the family’s kayak for at least 20 minutes, according to Buttitta.
"You see sea lions a lot, always up on the buoy, but I've never seen anything like this before," he said.
