3 Found Dead in Chicago's South Side

At least 16 people have been killed during a two-week period in Chicago.

April 30, 2008— -- CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago Police doing a well-being check Wednesdayat a South Side home discovered three people apparently shot todeath, the latest fatal shooting in a spate of violence that hasplagued the city in recent weeks.

Officer Marcel Bright said the officers made the grislydiscovery about 6:40 a.m. at a house in the 2800 block of southKildare Avenue. Authorities at the Cook County Medical Examiner'sOffice said there was a shooting at that address.

"This is a gang block. It's a war zone, it's not surprising atall," said 18-year-old hairstylist Kalina Ortiz.

Investigators weren't releasing any other information about thecase, the second time in as many weeks that multiple shootingvictims have been discovered inside a South Side home.

Last week, police found five people found dead in a ransackedhome. Those deaths brought the number of people shot to death inChicago in less than a week to more than a dozen.

The latest deaths come just days after a fired-up Mayor RichardDaley met with more than two dozen officials from religious groups,police, schools and social service agencies to talk about what'scausing the violence and how to stop it.

Police have stepped up patrols, put SWAT officers andspecialized units on the street and increased their fire power byusing combat rifles.
