— -- A 14-year-old girl is dead after shooting a fellow student at Alpine High School in Brewster County, Texas, this morning.

Officials in the town of Alpine say the high school student, who has not been identified, wounded a fellow student and killed herself. She had lived in the area for about six months, according to officials.

She was apparently a "good student," Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson said at a briefing today. Investigators are still working to determine a motive.

Dodson said police found the 14-year-old girl dead in a bathroom.

“It could have been a lot worse,” he noted.

A federal agent was accidentally shot and wounded by another agent as they responded to the scene, Dodson said. The agent was flown to a hospital in Odessa.

An active shooter drill was conducted just a few weeks ago at the high school.

"It’s something that we never wanted to happen here," Dodson said.
